An eerie quiet has fallen over the world of games. So much so that it is a wonder that anything happened gaming wise but some stuff did. So here is a quick run down of the game releases and news that caught my attention. This by the way is for the week of October 11th to the 17th, 2020.
Partisans 1941 –
Set in 1941 as Nazi Germany invades Soviet Russia. You and a group have fallen behind enemy lines as the war presses forward towards conquering Russia. You and a group of partisans must sneak around disrupting German supplies and engaging in stealth combat so that you’re forces remain undetected. It plays out as a real time strategy game with things continuing to move about as you plan how your partisans will take action. Released on October 14th, 2020 it was published by Daedalic Entertainment while development of the game was handled by Alter Games. It is only on PC and you can find it on the Steam storefront.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit –
A different take on the Mario Kart series in that you create the tracks using a special remote controlled mario kart. You create mostly flat race tracks around your home or other locations then using your Switch can race around those tracks vs one other human player and a bunch of AI. You need the remote control kart to create the tracks which makes the game cost 99.99 here in the U.S.A. The game released on the Switch on October 16th, 2020. Development was done by Velan Studios with publishing done of course by Nintendo.
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition –
The real time strategy game that helped define the genre is back in this definitive version with full updated graphics and soundtrack. You are the leader of your chosen nation and must lead them from tiny isolated civilization to the mightiest of superpowers. Development was handled by Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires while the publishing duty fell to Xbox Game Studio who released it on PC on October 15th, 2020.
Rockstar Games has bought development studio Ruffian Games makers of Crackdown 2 and 3. The studio which is located in Dundee, Scotland will be renamed Rockstar Dundee following the name tradition of many Rockstar Studios. Ruffian Games has been working with the Rockstar Games group assisting in game development since 2019. Rockstar released a brief press release confirming the news that you can check out should you so desire.
I wonder what they’ll be doing for Rockstar as you never hear news about their studios individually. Also quite curious that this is a bit of a full circle studio wise. Ruffin was founded by former Realtime Worlds a studio that closed in 2010. Workers from Realtime Worlds came over from Rockstar North after it was acquire by Rockstar and changed its name from DMA Designs. If a worker were to follow that whole trail they could wind up back where they were when the name change occurred. Odd how things work out.
In the United Kingdom misleading ads about games specifically Homescapes and Gardenscapes where the ad wasn’t all that related to the game, have been banned. These were ads often seen when you played a free to play game on your phone that showed supposed gameplay when these elements would only happen on a few levels at best. This was reported by Gamasutra.com who have the full story.
Honestly it is such a bad look for any developer to show game play and the games aren’t really based around what was shown. I don’t know how they have gotten away with it for so long, but it seriously needs to stop. All it does is make people angry and when people go to check reviews on the app stores all they’re going to see is angry reviews shooting said developer in the foot. It’s just a bad idea and should never ever be done.
If you’re looking for a turn based military game set in a medieval period, you might want to check out Field of Glory II: Medieval. It is an upcoming strategy game from developer Byzantine Games in which you take command of an army in Europe during the early middle ages. Conquer Europe and establish yourself as a king to rule your country.
It’s a bit odd and worrying that the reveal is a trailer that shows no game play or even a shot of the game. Plus it is announced as coming soon. The steam page pictures have me curious but also worried as they look clean but also rather empty. I feel like this is a game I should be curious about and want to play but so far it isn’t winning me over.
