A rumbling bumbling week has come to tell its story of the week of video games. That is the gaming releases, gaming news, and some entertainment news that came from August 2nd to the 8th 2020. Please know that this is the stuff that caught my interest and I felt worth sharing.
This is an action platformer where you play as a skull. You have been slightly revived on a mysterious island where a group of siblings/immortal beings simply cannot get along with one another. It’s up to you to find a way to create a lasting peace by traveling about the island and solving puzzles. It released on August 4th, 2020 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Development of the game was done by Finish Line Games and publishing was handled by Modus Games.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout –
A mini-game centric last man standing battle royale game. Face down opponents as you try to survive to be crowned champion of the world or just get knocked off again and again through harsh mini-games or just bad luck. Released on PC and PS4 from Mediatonic who developed it and published Devolver Digital. It hit stores on August 4th, 2020.
Company of Crime –
It’s 1960’s London and a crime wave has hit the city. You have a choice of either building up a criminal enterprise during this time, or you can help Scotland Yard bring the criminals to their knees. Either way you’ll soon find your characters in the thick of a fight and with blood on their hands as they tend to business in this turn based strategy game. Released by developer Resistance Games with the help of publisher 1C Entertainment the game came out on August 8th 2020 for PC (Steam).
Microsoft have announced that if you want to use the Xbox One controller on the upcoming Xbox Series X you can. You are perfectly able to do so along with any controllers that worked on the Xbox One should be recognized by the new console.
It’s pretty nice to not have to worry about controllers for a new console and probably means that the new Xbox won’t have a major revision to their controller. And even if they do developers will probably still program in controls for as far back as the 360 controller since that’s seen so much love on PC.
For those looking forward to the new Marvel Avengers game from from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics revealed that Spiderman is coming. However he will be a Playstation exclusive when the DLC does get released and will remain so for at least for a year or so. This comes directly from Playstation so you can check out their blog post on the matter.
Exclusive DLC feels like it should have been left in the 360 and PS3 era of gaming. Alas it seems we are stuck with it and I doubt Square Enix cares much what players think since they’ll get their money from the game. It just ugly that a company would divide its own player base and keep things from it because of a console name.
For Pikmen fans Nintendo has some news, perhaps not as exciting as Pikmen 4 news would be but, they are bringing Pikmen 3 Deluxe over to the Switch. This also means that the digital version of the game has been taken off the Wii U’s eshop and will no longer be purchasable through there.
Nintendo does good followed by the usual with Nintendo doing something not so good. It’s nice for the fans that didn’t get to play Pikmen 3 but to take away the option from those that might have wanted to play it on Wii U? Nintendo is such an oddity at times and disappointing so many times over.
Sony held a new State of Play video event not for the upcoming Playstation 5 but to show off PS4 games and some PSVR stuff that will be arriving soon. The showed off some of what to expect with the new Crash Bandicoot. If you ever wanted to play the new Hitman trilogy in VR well it can now happen if you have PSVR but not until January 2021. The interesting neon blasted adventure game Aeon must Die looked amazing but troubled.
It was not a bad showcase of games. It didn’t wow me with its games, but that’s going to happen from time to time. Though, it does seem to be happening with increasing frequency with these showcases. I will say that there was a very nice mix of games there so many people will have something that made them excited and frankly that’s all that matters.
Now as for Aeon Must Die there is a report that all of the developers have quit development of the game. This is because they were not being paid and that they were being asked to crunch development to get the game done. Focus Home Interactive who are publishing the game have released a comment that they’re looking into the matter but they’re not involved in the games development.
This is a potentially ugly situation for the game that looks quite original and interesting. It’s a sad situation if it is true that the game was essentially stolen by developer Limestone from the development team. I hope that things get worked out and that the game can come out eventually and uncompromised by all of this. I don’t see that happening but I hope it works out in the end.
The President of the United States issued and executive order banning transactions from WeChat in the United States. The owner of WeChat is Tencent who happen to have partial ownership in a lot of gaming companies in the United States and even fully own Riot Games. This meant that potential business transactions involving these companies could be put at risk since the order bans transactions. The White House then clarified that this executive order does not apply to video game companies.
That the executive order wasn’t clear enough in the first place about what it applied to and didn’t apply to is frustrating. It seems that it is standard operating procedure for this President to make things as unclear as possible to see what he can get away with. Anyway, its good that this doesn’t involve gaming companies because who knows how well that would go. It would probably ruin a lot of companies who would be banned from doing business until they could sell the company or shares owned by Tencent. It would be a mess much like the potential TikTok situation. It’s also one worth keeping an eye on as the president loves to change his mind in a moments notice so everything probably will still be under threat.
Microsoft and Apple can’t seem to get along when it comes to xCloud. Apple have made it hard for the game streaming service to work on the iOS platform. This is because they feel the need to review every game that would be playable on the xCloud service and since they cannot possible do this they are blocking it from release. If you wish to know more head over to Businessinsider.com who have a more through report.
Ah Apple, always limiting what can go on the App Store because unless it passes their grubby and unfiltered unknown requirements it can’t be allowed up. This makes them look foolish, which they generally do whenever it comes to services being put up on gaming store. I’m not surprised since Google’s Stadia isn’t allowed up either, and if I remember correctly Valve also ran into trouble because of the Steam Link App. Well, I guess there is no helping fools like Apple who need to control everything that goes on their platform.
Ren and Stimpy are making a comeback. It will be a re-imagining of the show which is being developed by Viacom CBS for Comedy Central. It will have a whole new team behind it and of course it is making the switch from Nickelodeon to Comedy Central little else is known so far. This will join the reboot of Beavis and Butthead and the spin-off Jodie from the animated show Daria as Comedy Central revamps their animated shows. If you wish to know what little more is known you can head over to TheHollywoodReporter.com for the story.
I don’t know about this. It feels cheap and without at least some of the original crew returning it feels like a nostalgia grab without realizing what made the original work. There is a chance that it good which would be great to see. And this will have little to no effect on the beloved show in its original guise. But, it still feels off. Well it is what it is and they’re going to make it only time will tell if they manage to make something great.
