Welcome to another blog post about the week in the world of gaming. This time for June 21st to the 26th 2020 and it will be covering some of the gaming releases, gaming news, and entertainment news of the week. I will note that this is the news that caught my interest and that I thought was worth talking about.
SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated –
Bikini Bottom is under attack and it’s up to SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy to save the city from robots led by the dastardly Plankton. The game features complete redone graphics and a new multiplayer mode. Originally released on Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, PC, and even Gameboy Advanced this remastered remake came out on June 23rd 2020. The remaster was handled by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic. It released onto the PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch platforms.
A free to play multiplayer action game. You are a ninja and must fight in a tournament to prove your worth. You can play as a team of four against four or in a free for all against seven other players. Released on the Switch by developer GungHo Online Entertainment who also published it the game arrived on the platform on June 24th 2020.
In a surprise move Microsoft has decided to shut down their streaming platform Mixer. It’s last day will be July 22nd 2020 and after that will be no more. For any further game streaming Microsoft will be working with Facebook Gaming. If you’re looking to read further into what’s happening there is a blog post over on Mixer.com.
Wow, they threw a lot of money at this and folded it so quickly. It’s sad because Twitch really does need the compeittion and while Mixer was behind in viewers they had a decent platform. I’m sad to see it go even though I rarely ever used it. Hopefully some new sites pop up in its wake and grow to challenge Twitch, YouTube and Facebook Gaming.
The next fighter in the second wave of DLC for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has been announced. This time the character will be coming from the new Nintendo series ARMS and it will be Min Min. They also showed off a bunch of other content coming to the game when the next patch hits on June 29th, 2020.
It’s always fun to see what characters get dropped into Smash and see how they handle themselves. Of course it is a little difficult to tell as Mr. Sakurai is such a master of his game that he makes everything look easy. It will be fun to see the new character in action and see what players can do with Min Min and how well balanced she is versus others.
Beloved series Crash Bandicoot is crashing back into action with an upcoming fourth game in the series. It will be crashing its way to consoles (PS5, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X) on October 2nd, 2020 with the title Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.
Well this trailer felt very lately nineties and most of that feeling came from either the music or the platforming. That’s okay though because the game itself looked good and well fun which is all that matters. It is a bit surprising that this is only coming to Playstation and Xbox hopefully it makes it to PC and Switch at some point but since it is Activision doing the publishing its hard to know what they’re thinking at any single point in time.
For those that want some racing action that’s semi serious with touches of arcade-ness to it. Well Project Cars 3 now has its release date. It will be driving its way onto PC and consoles on August 28th 2020.
I’m kind of sad that Project Cars has faded so much from the limelight of when the first game was announced. It seems to have dropped by the wayside for other bigger games like DiRT, Forza, Gran Turismo, hell even Need for Speed gets more attention. It will probably be another solid entry that slips by noticed but perhaps not as much as some other titles. But, here is to hoping I’m wrong and the game is amazing and sells well.
The world of Cybepunk 2077 gets to feel that little bit closer. CD Projekt released the first Night City Wire episode trailer to show off the action that you’ll be dealing with as you play the game. It gives a bit of dive into the game with a trailer and a discussion with the development team.
The trailer reminded me of a cross between Grand Theft Auto, Mad Max, and Deus Ex. Which is an interesting and odd combination as your watching it because it looks fun but not quite meshing from what I saw. Of course the trailer was a slick over cut trailer that combines lots of scenes so it gets a bit hard to get an actual read on if it is meshing or not. I’m sure that fans are over the moon about what they saw though.
Chickens are on the loose and creating havoc once again for Aardman claymation animation. The sequel to the beloved Chicken Run is heading to Netflix. Variety.com has the story and a bit of the potential plot line for those interested.
While I’m not entirely surprised that Aardman seems to be by passing theaters for this film. I am a little surprised they went with Netflix and not something like HBO Max or Disney+. Granted Netflix probably has a bigger audience and gave them more control over the work itself. I’m curious to see what they’re going to do with this new movie which to be honest I kind of want a whole new cast for it so that it isn’t tied heavily to the original. Not that having any of the original cast back is wrong, I just feel like it would be better story wise to have it be all new.
Fans of the game Disco Elysum might happy to know that a TV series is in the works. The developers of the game ZA/UM are teaming up with dj2 Entertainment to create and develop a series based on the world of the game which in turn is loosely based on the universe created in the book Sacred and Terrible Air. Also reported by Variety.com who talked to both dj2 and ZA/UM as they announced the news.
I’m all for it as long as it isn’t another show that winds up on Netflix. So many games turned into TV shows wind up on Netflix and then sort of get lost in the shuffle of other stuff that gets put on the streamer. It wouldn’t be the worse thing to happen, I just want to see what other streamers or even premier channels could do with the property.
In sad news director Joel Schumacher passed away. He has had quite the storied career as a filmmaker having both good and bad films, from the not so loved Batman films having taken over from Tim Burton. To his well loved St. Elmo’s Fire and The Lost Boys. The Los Angeles Times has written up an obituary about him,
May he rest in peace, his work though not always loved brought many fans joy.
