The week is settling down to retire and before it does, I’m running out another weekly blog post about this week in video games. I cover the video game release, the gaming news, and some entertainment news for the week of September 8th to the 14th, 2019. This will cover the stuff that caught my interest and what I thought worth getting out there in case someone missed it. With all that said enjoy.
Borderlands 3 –
The shoot and loot RPG series is back for more mayhem in this first person shooter. The game takes place after the events of the second game and Handsome Jack’s death with the discovery of vaults on other planets and an organization known as the Children of the Vault. You have been recruited, along with your friends if you co-op action, to put a stop to the leaders of this organization the Calypso Twins. The game released on September 13th, 2019 from developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games. The title released on PS4, PC (Epic Game Store), and Xbox One.
NHL 20 –
The new NHL season is right around the corner and so it is time for a new hockey game to hit the ice on Xbox One and PS4. You can create your own player and help lead your team to glory, or take control of your favorite NHL team where you can mold and lead the team for several seasons. The game was made by EA Vancouver and published by EA Sports on September 13th, 2019.
A 2D pixel side scroller with lots of violent action and death. The land of Cvstodia has fallen to a curse and you are the lone survivor of the massacre called the Silent Sorrow. By surviving you have been cursed to live and die to be resurrected until you can lift the curse on the land. Developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Team17 it came out on September 10th, 2019 on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
An island has been discovered and now many nations are trying to colonize it. In this action RPG you play as a neutral human who has just arrived and can choose to help whoever you want. You’ll also have to deal with a mysterious illness that has come to the land and figure out why its here and a cure to it. Daemon X Machina —

Apple Arcade now has a price and a release date. It will be out on September 19th, 2019 and will cost 4.99 a month in USD. It will have one hundred games at launch with many more coming plus exclusive games to the platform. There will be no streaming of games it is all downloads to your iOS device. Head over to 9to5Mac.com for a full run down.
That’s a pretty good price for the service and I’m sure it will attract a few customers. I on the other hand don’t feel sold on it. Nothing about it has screamed must get to me which has been a pretty big failing of Apple from what I’ve seen lately. There products are good, just not good enough to entice me.
KFC the finger licking chicken fast food restaurant is making a video game. But not just any type of game this is a dating sim where you try seduce and date Colonel Sanders. If you wish to find out more you can head over to noisypixel.net for information.
Wait what? A dating sim? Well this is certainly unusual and I’m not sure how well this will do as its a niche genre and well Colonel Sanders dating will probably be even more niche. But, eh, whatever if you enjoy that’s great.
More battle royale have invaded unsuspecting games. The latest being Civilization 6 which will force players to battle it out in an ever shrinking map with the last civilization standing being the winner.
This could be kind of cool, but it might be a dead mode if the player base doesn’t take to it or there isn’t AI bots to fill out a game. I’d be curious to see how the game would play out, but this does seem to be on the rather late side for the battle royale crazy which has died down a bit.
Gamestop is looking to close 180 to 200 of its poor performing stores as it deals with debt and lagging sales. All of these closures around the globe will likely be happening before the end of 2019 and not the fiscal year. This news is from gamesindustry.biz.
They’ve probably needed to do this for quite a while as profits have fallen as the consoles age out of this life cycle. Which is the other point Gamestop pretty much lives and dies by these game console cycles they make more money when they consoles are new not so much when they reach towards the end of their lives. It’s a balancing act and Gamestop needs to figure it out quickly before they finally disappear into the abyss like so many other box store companies.
A new action adventure puzzle game has appeared in A Knights Quest from Sky 9 Games and publisher Curve Digital. You play as a young knight who must save the world from an evil force that wishes to rule over it. The game is aiming for a fall 2019 release on all consoles and on PC.
This is a cute if some what generic looking game. It’s been a while since this type of genre game has come out and really made waves and I’m kind of hoping this one does. It would be nice to revive the genre of action adventure games so that more of them were out there.
Discord is closing down its game store in the Nitro subscription service. It will shut down the game list on October 15th, 2019 after only a year in service. Any games that you have downloaded are yours to keep. Discord made the announcement on their blog where they also highlighted several other changes as well.
I was actually wondering what had happened to the store and the games on Discord not too long ago as I hadn’t heard anything lately. And now I have my answer. It’s sad but if people didn’t wind up using as Discord says then it isn’t a big surprise that they’d do away with it.
Apple has also shown off their upcoming TV service Apple TV+ which will begin service on November 1st, 2019 for 4.99 a month. If you buy an Apple specified device however you’ll get a free year of the service. You can watch the full Apple event below or just watch the trailer for their new show See.
Again, Apple has priced their product very well. The problem is that the content is slim and right now doesn’t look all that great. See looks a bit silly in both premise and execution though visually stunning. None of the other content has made me go I need to watch this. Apple for so long was a place to be different and innovate and it doesn’t feel like this service does any of that. On a side note how many services out there are going to go around and put a + sign next to their service name? It’s starting to sound silly when you call everything plus.
MoviePass is once and for finally kaput as of September 14th, 2019. The service let people subscribe to them for a monthly fee and in return one could go see just about any movie in theaters as long as that theater participated. However, MoviePass ran into a funding issue when the subscribers were going to see more movies and the service didn’t have the money to continually support this model. This news comes from CNBC who have a report on what’s going on with the company.
I think just about everyone saw the writing on the wall for MoviePass when they began to throw lots of limits at subscribers and with lots of news stories about how they were running out of money. Sad to see it go this way but such is the way of business and we now have the AMC movie pass which is probably better set to succeed as long as AMC is willing to keep it. Also of interesting note they say that bad news drops on a Friday after the stock exchange closes. This certainly appears to be one such example of that happening.
