Look at it! Another week come and gone down the drain before one can snap their fingers… fine you snapped your fingers before the week was done, but it feels that way so I’m going to stick to it. This is of course my weekly blog post on the week that was in gaming releases, gaming news, and a touch of entertainment news that caught my interest for September 1st to the 7th, 2019. Please enjoy.
Creature in the Well –
A hack and slash adventure game that puts you in levels that play much like a pinball game. You’ll have to knock balls though bouncers and other objects as a sort of puzzle. In completing these puzzles you go deeper and deeper into the world. The game came out on Xbox One, PC, and Switch from developer Flight School Studio who also published it on September 6th, 2019.
WRC 8 –
A new rally racing game is timing itself through tight twisty roads in an effort to win the World Rally Championship. Take to racing in specially built rally cars and assemble a team to help you rise up to take the overall championship. Released on September 5th, 2019 by developer KT Racing and then published by BigBen Interactive. The game came out on PC (Epic Game Store), Xbox One, and PS4. There is a Switch version which will be released around November 2019.
Gears of War 5 –
You play as Kait Diaz an outside who is of locust descent who is helping to try and reestablish the Hammer of Dawn network. Along the way you’ll discover the history of your character and your family along with the origins of the Locust. Developed for the Xbox One and PC by developer The Coalition with publisher Xbox Game Studios. The game released on September 6th, 2019 for those that pre-ordered it and a full release on September 10th, 2019.
NBA 2K20 –
With the NBA season ready to get back underway it is time for the annual sports franchises to pop up. Take control of a franchise and lead them to the championship or take control of a player and lead your team to try and win it all. Released on September 6th, 2019 for PS4, Switch, PC, Xbox One, iOS, and Android. It was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports.
Final Fantasy VIII: Remastered –
War is raging as the Republic of Galbadia led by the sorceress Edea strive to fight and take over all the other countries. You play as Squall and a group of mercenaries trying to fight back and put a stop to this tyrannical attempt at ruling the people. Released on Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PS4 it was developed and published by Square Enix on September 3rd, 2019.
Gears of War 5 will feature a new playable character. The character will be modeled after and played by former wrestler Dave Batista.
This is a cool little thing. I get Dave Batista wanting to raise his profile and do lots of different projects to prove himself as a movie star. Hopefully, he doesn’t overdo it and people grow tired of seeing him everywhere and in everything. There is an art to picking where and when you appear that can be just as advantageous as getting your image out there.
A new Nintendo Direct dropped out of the sky with Switch based news for the starved masses of fans. There were quite a few surprises and some odd games that some thought might never happen. Overall a pretty good direct as it mostly stayed on the games. The one side track that they did make was for the Nintendo Switch Online announcing that SNES games are coming and that they will be included for those that buy a NSO account. Some of the games announced include: Little Town Hero which was formerly known as Town, Deadly Premonition 2, The Return of the Obra Dinn, and the re-release of Doom 64.
This was a pretty great direct in my opinion. It had a little bit of everything, showing off game we knew about, new games, some re-releases and upgraded remakes. Granted it might not have had everything for everyone as it did seem a bit Japanese-centric in some regards aka JRPG’s. Still overall a good show.
The Uplay+ service has launched with a free month of service for all those interested but only runs for the month of September. This however hasn’t come without a small hiccup in that one game hasn’t been included yet, despite original promises. Anno 1800 has been held back due to technical issues. This was reported on reddit.com but you can check out the Ubi support page to confirm it.
Well it is nice that the service launched and that people are free to try it out until September 30th, 2019. A bit weird that they pulled back a game that was heavily promoted during the pitch to consumers. It’s a wait and see and I guess try out to see if it is worth it for consumers.
The upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting multiplayer but, it will be arrive well after the game launches.
I wonder what kind of multiplayer they’re planning? It seems like the game would be good for a co-op experience but I’m drawing a blank otherwise. I guess we will have to wait and see what’s going to come down the road.
Fans of the surprise E3 game Ghostwire Tokyo will be upset to learn that the creative director on the game, Ikumi Nakamura, has left Tango Gameworks. It’s hard to tell exactly what caused her to leave without rumor mongering.
Uh, what? I hope this doesn’t doom the game but it is never a good thing when a creative director just leaves. This sucks for the developers and fans because who knows what is going to happen to the game now or if it will even be similar to what was originally shown. I guess one has to hold onto hope as that’s all we can really do.
Plants and zombies are fighting each other once again. EA has unveiled a bit more about their upcoming shooter Plants Vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. They’ve introduced some of the areas you’ll be fighting in, some of the modes, and of course the wacky new characters you’ll get a chance to play as.
It’s a bit weird that they have dropped the Garden Warfare name, but at the same time it might allow them to draw in fans of the original series who were turned off by different name. My only worry is that this game seems to be flying so under the radar that no one will be aware of the October 18th, 2019.
Nintendo have also announced that they will no longer be doing monthly releases of NES games on the Switch and will also not be doing monthly SNES titles. This news comes from Vooks.net who found the information on Nintendo’s Japan website.
As long as Nintendo keeps releasing games at a decent rate and we get big games and rare games I got no problem with this. It all comes down to have frequently the games come out though, if we start to see a long span between releases the value of Nintendo’s Online Service will quickly plummet to no worth it.
For those looking for a city building game that is a bit more of a classic SimCity style, then the upcoming game Smart City Plan might be for you. It let’s you handle building a city, solving city problems like traffic and keeping citizens happen and so on. It’s a PC game aiming for an early 2020 release.
It looks like a nice mesh of the old SimCity games and newer games with almost a bit nostalgic feel to it in a way. The game looks like a nice take on the genre and hopefully it adds something to help it stand out amongst the many other city building games.
EA has published a blog post discussing Need For Speed: Heat handling of the cars. Specifically going into how the fan base likes that cars drift to get faster times around corners and that it is an arcade racer. But that they are also tweaking the handling to more correspond with certain drive trains and driving surfaces. Race over to EA.com for the full post.
I don’t know if this alleviates peoples frustrations with how they perceive that the game is too arcade handling wise. It’s good to know that the developers are listening to fans, but they’re also trying to make a game that they want and enjoy.
This is the Police creator Weappy Studio has a new game, Rebel Cops, about cops that will be coming out shortly. This time their game is a full on turn based strategy game where your small town has been taken over by the mob along with most of the police. You and a select group of cops who didn’t buy into the mob must now fight to save the town. It’s set to release on September 17th, 2019 for PC. If you wish to read more about it, PCGamer.com has a small bite sized preview.
I like This is the Police and I keep meaning to get the second game but always forget to. It’s nice to see a developer continually changing things up and evolve. This looks like it could be a solid under the radar game. Unfortunately it does appear to be headed well under the radar as September is a packed month video game wise. I wonder if this game might head to consoles? The Switch audience seems to love these small games as well as other consoles also loving these games. It might be a better fit there then lost in the land of PC digital stores.
A full trailer for the upcoming satirical film Jojo Rabbit released. The film is from director Taika Waititi and is all about a young boy caught up in the fanaticism of Nazism during World War 2 who slowly learns things aren’t always as they appear. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Jojo’s mother, Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo Betzler and Taika Waititi an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler that only Jojo can see.
This looked pretty quirky and silly, which is good as we don’t seem to have many comedies that stand out these days. I am fearful though that this trailer pretty much showed the entire story for the movie. I’m not sure if that is the case but that’s the feeling I get from the trailer.
