And now for the blog post to end August.

A smaller week to blog about since the madness of Gamescom has passed by. I’m looking at the news that caught my interest for the week of August 25 to 31, 2019. This covers some of the game releases, gaming news, and a touch of entertainment news for your reading pleasure. Now onto the mad scribbling…

Game Releases:

Astral Chain:

You are a police office in the world of The Ark investigating crimes that have occurred and gathering evidence to solve the crimes. You’re partnered with an astral being who helps you solve puzzles and get around the world. Humanity is faced with extinction and invasion from the inter-dimensional being the Chimeras and its up to you to help put a stop to it. Developed by PlatinumGames it was published by Nintendo for the Switch. It was released on August 30th, 2019. This game plays out in an action adventure style with combat and puzzle sections.

Control:

You are a part of the FBC The Federal Bureau of Control a secret government organization that deals with strange phenomena that break the laws of physics. You are in the New York City branch of the FCB investigating when the Hiss an enemy with powerful abilities and wanting to corrupt reality invades. You are tasked with corralling your own abilities to break physics and defeat the Hiss. Released on August 27th, 2019 by developer Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. It came out on Xbox One, PC, and PS4. It’s an action adventure game with puzzles and combat that is ever changing due to the powers you and your enemies have.

Game News:

Nintendo released a trailer for their upcoming mobile game version of Mario Kart for iOS and Android. It’s called Mario Kart Tour and it will be a free to play game that will launch on September 25th, 2019.

I’m not sure about this game. It looks nice but it also looks like it would eat the battery of any mobile phone for breakfast. I also have a problem with Nintendo’s iOS and Android games as they’re fun for the briefest of time before becoming dull and repetitive. I don’t see how this one will be any different and it will probably be micro-transaction heavy.

Telltale Games is making a comeback? A group of investors have purchased the assets of the company with the plan to revive Telltale. They’re moving the studio to Malibu, California and will re-release some of their older titles along with developing new games based on past successes. Brain Waddle and Jamie Ottilie will be leading the way. You can read about this story over on Wired.com.

This is unexpected news as I figured they were pretty much deader than a door nail. I don’t have high hopes that this will somehow make the studio good again, but you never know. It sucks for the employees that things went the way they did and that the owners couldn’t figure out a deal to sell the company but it may have been far too late. It’s hard to not speculate and say oh what if and how about, when you don’t know the details of what went on in the business during those last few years. It’s all about waiting to see what will happen now.

Disney is bringing back two classic games in Lion King and Aladdin as a remastered collection game. It will have the SEGA Genesis and Game Boy versions as well as a final cut version which never made it to retail of Aladdin. The Lion King version will be getting the SNES version and Game Boy version. This remaster will be released on October 29th, 2019 for PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.

Nostalgia and the recent live action remake films making a lot of money seemed to be the reason that we’re getting this collection. Also, since Disney isn’t much into making games this was probably the cheaper option then creating whole new games. On a side note I wonder if you can really call two games a collection? It seems like you shouldn’t as there would be a better way to describe it, but oh well.

Two different accusations of sexual assault have been made against two game developers. Alec Holowka creator of Night in the Woods has been accused via Twitter by Zoe Quinn. Then there is the accusation that composer Jeremy Soule who worked on The Elder Scrolls series and Guild Wars raped Nathalie Lawhead. Sadly, Alec Holowka has decided to take his life after these accusations his sister said on Twitter. The Zoe Quinn tweet has since been deleted. You can if you wish, read Nathalie’s blog post about the sexual assault.

Sexual assault shouldn’t be happening at all. That said, I’m going to try and not rush to judgment for either side as I don’t see it as helpful in the court of public opinion. I think it needs to be sorted out in actual court and that people should be aware that such accusations have happened. But, I’m not a fan of lynch mobbing a person just because of an accusation which is extremely popular on the internet today for the smallest of things.

The next Yakuza game the seventh in the main franchise has been announced with major changes coming. The combat is switching to a turn based RPG style and the world is shifting from the usual city to a new location. In the west the game will be called Yakuza: Like a Dragon and it will go on sale in Japan on January 16th, 2020 with a later 2020 release for the rest of the western world.

I’m always interested in the Yakuza series but never really bothered to try and play them. Maybe this one will draw me in if I see more of it. I find it interesting that their going for such a drastic changes in the mainline game where so many people have come to love the game the way it is. Change needs to happen to keep the game fresh, just expect that it would happen to the side game series.

The goose is loose. The indies game Untitled Goose Game which surprised and caught a lot of people attention when it debuted during a Nintendo Direct has a release date. It’s coming to PC and Switch on September 20th, 2019.

I’ve been waiting for this game as to me it looks like it could be a fun little puzzle game or just be a slight asshole as a goose kind of thing. It also is charming to look at, which won me over with its oddity and cuteness. I’m hoping the reviews are good for this one.

Developer Chucklefish has been accused of not paying dozens of workers. Some of them who were also underage at the time the game Starbound was being developed. A few others have chimed in saying they weren’t paid for their work but the main accusation came via Twitter user @Demanrisu.

Oh dear, if this is true that is a terrible look for the developer and it makes you question what’s going on at Chucklefish as a studio. Why was this allowed to happen if it happened? Just so many thoughts of why didn’t the former employee go to the police or the local labor board? And if they did why didn’t anything happen? So many questions, which will probably never be followed up on.

Entertainment News:

Disney has announced that R rated content will not be allowed onto the Disney+ streaming service. Such content will be headed instead to Hulu which Disney also owns a large stake in. The Disney+ service will remain a family friendly one with content going to the PG-13 rating. Head over to Uproxx.com for the story.

I wonder what this means for the Mandalorian as it appeared to have a couple of brutal looking scenes in the trailer. I guess we won’t see much on screen violence in that show as it will magically happen just off screen. As for the not letting R rated content on their service I think it makes sense but it is also pretty lame. It’s very reminiscent of Nintendo with their stiff buttoned up kid friendly look for so long, which they still have but has gone down a bit recently. I will say it is a smart move business wise as they try to suck you into their eco-system of paying for their content in order to get all that you want. I don’t know if it will pay off in the end as they really need more shows on Hulu to really bring people to want to pay for it or people will wind up just getting Disney+ for the kids and not even really bother with anything else by them.

Warner Brothers upcoming Joker movie got its second and final trailer. It revealed a little bit more about the movie while not fully divulging what the story line is going to be. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular Joker nemesis to the Batman who isn’t likely in the movie. The film is premiering at the Venice Film Festival before headed to the Toronto International Film Festival. It will hit theaters on October 4th, 2019.

If you’re trying to avoid spoilers it will probably be best to ignore most of the social media presence and film festival hubbub for the next month or so. The trailer itself looks beautifully shot with how vibrant yet gritty it feels. I think a lot of that comes from how much Joker’s outfit pops when he’s wearing the purple suit.

Gordon Bressack the writer on a lot of love 90’s cartoon shows has passed away at age 68 due to a fight with health issues. He worked on Animaniacs, Bionic Six, Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, Darkwing Duck, Mighty Max, Pinky and the Brain, The Smurfs, and Tiny Toon Adventures. This news comes from Hollywoodreporter.com.

It’s sad to hear when anyone dies, but it’s especially terrible when that person had such an impact on your childhood. His work touched so many. My thoughts to his family in this hard time.
