Welcome to the weekly blog post about the week that was in gaming for July 7th to the 13th, 2019. I’m covering the game releases, gaming news, and some entertainment news that caught my interest and that I felt worth sharing. Please take a look.
A game that combines tower defense and a side scrolling platforming adventure. You build a town and its defenses to protect against the monsters. You must also venture out and attack monsters on your own in side scrolling action platforming section. Released on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Switch on July 10th, 2019. It was developed by ACE Team and published by SEGA.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 –
A Minecraft style game set in the action RPG world of Dragon Quest after the events of Dragon Quest II where the Children of Hargon are seeking revenge for the defeat inflicted on them by the descendants of Erdrick. You’re tasked with building and defending what you build as you explore areas and improve your techniques so that you can take down the Children of Hargon. Developed by Omega Team and Square Enix and published by Square Enix. It released on Switch and PS4 for a worldwide release on July 12th, 2019. Previously it released in Japan on December 20th, 2018.
Blazing Chrome –
A 2D side scrolling pixel shooter, where your only concern is eliminating the things shooting back at you. The world has been taken over by Militant A.I. computers and you and your robot friend are the resistance fighting your way through the hordes for your freedom. Released on July 11th, 2019 by developer Joymasher and Publishers The Arcade Crew and CE-Asia it came out on PS4, PC, Switch, and Xbox One.
There might be a new Super Monkey Ball game coming down the line from SEGA? At least that’s what a potential rating of a game that goes by that name implies will happen. The game was rated by the Taiwanese video game rating group but there was no clear indication of what it potentially might be other than being related in some form to food. This version of Monkey Ball looks to headed to PC, PS4, and Switch. If you wish to learn more not that there is much more to learn head over to IGN who has the news.
I don’t have high hopes that this will turn out to be much like the beloved first and second game. The feeling I’m getting is that this is some weird spin-off that might not even make it to or get a western release.
Lord of the Rings will be getting a new MMORPG as Amazon has partnered with Leyou to get the game made. It will be a free to play game for consoles and PC and was announced last year by developer Athlon Games. While, Amazon recently secured rights to make a Lord of the Rings TV show it appears that they will not be related. This is all according to TheVerge.com.
Hmmm. It makes sense that Amazon would do this as having a game tied to another product can raise interest in either end product. I don’t know that I trust Amazon though to deliver a game especially a big one. They’ve been long working on their first game and little to nothing has really come about from it. I’m not sure if they’re building their own engine for it or if they’re modifying an existing engine but whatever it is they certainly have their work cut out for them with that first game and now a LOTR game which if it isn’t good fans will be mighty disappointed.
Nintendo has announced the Switch Lite a version of their Switch console. The major difference between this and the original are that it doesn’t hook up to a TV making it mobile use only. Other features include: the controller is built onto it much like old Nintendo handhelds, the HD Rumble and IR features in the console controller will not make it over. Games that require motion controls means you’ll have to buy the separate Switch Joycon’s to play it. The screen is also a touch smaller coming in at 5.5 inches compared to the 6.2 inches of the original. Battery life as always will depend on the game but they estimate that it will last a little longer from 3 to 7 hours. The Switch Lite will arrive in stores on September 20th, 2019 and has the suggested retail price of 199.99 USD.
I get what Nintendo is trying to do here, its the same thing that they did with the 2DS in that they’re creating a platform that offers users a choice. This product is also probably mostly aimed at the Asian markets where mobile game and mobile platforms are what everyone uses to play games on. I don’t know if this will catch on anywhere else or if it will just turn into a nice option to have. Hopefully it doesn’t confuse parents when it comes to Christmas time and they’re left trying to figure out which Switch their kid wanted.
The Turok series has had a long history of games since the N64 games and its been an up and down one. A new game has appeared but not in the usual vein of the first person dinosaur shooting extravaganza. The game is called Turok: Escape from Lost Valley and it will be coming soon to PC with a Steam release date of July 25th, 2019.
This is a different take on the Turok series and might be based more on the books then the previous games. I don’t know if it will be any good, but the series was in need of hefty change and this might do the trick. The old hardcore shooter never translated over from the N64 era and the original games while loved are so very dated. I’m willing to see what reviews make of it.
A new city builder set in ancient Egyptian times is being made. A trailer showing off some game play of Builders of Egypt showed you building a town and raising armies to defend against attackers.
I’m getting a combination of Total War out of this with bits of city building. The trailer has me intrigued but also worried a bit. It feels like they’re only showing the bits with the most polish and look ready to go. I understand why they’re doing that, but when the trailer doesn’t feel like its showing you all that it can then it begins to worry me.
A new multiplayer cooking game, Bake ‘n Switch,is on the horizon and baking its way towards early access. In it you’re competing against your friends while also slightly helping them as you create dough like creatures that you must bake before time runs out.
This looked kind of fun? I don’t really have the friends and don’t play many multiplayer games with friends. So, this probably isn’t for me. But, for those that love this type of game check it out and see if it fits the madness you want in your games.
Steam has introduced its newest thing in Steam Labs. This is Valve experimenting with discover-ability, what kind of videos you see on a game steam page, what games get recommended, and of course what A.I. learns from your choices. The reason this was announced was that for the first time Valve is opening it up to the public to get feedback on what consumers want. That said you don’t have to participate if none of it appeals to you. Head over to Steam to check out the news.
I wonder how much of the feedback they’ll actually take into consideration. At some point people are going to say they don’t like something but the data will point to the fact that lots of people use something in some way and it will come down do they choose what the group who gave feedback wants, or do they go with the data.
Netflix has scored another potentially interesting TV series. This time they’re taking the loved Cuphead and bringing it to life as a TV show. It will be called The Cuphead Show! and it will be worked on by King Features Syndicate. Hollywoodreporter.com has the full scoop of action for those interested.
Yeah the only fear I have is the animation, they have to nail the animation that was in the game and bring it over to the show. If they don’t, well it will probably be fine but it will lose a bit of luster and hopes that something cool is being made. Netflix is also moving to not show as much smoking in their shows, I don’t know if that’s going to wind up effecting Cuphead but one certainly hopes that it won’t.
The feared and rumored Warner Brother streaming service has a name and big shows to go along with it. It’s being called HBO Max and WB has bought back the streaming of Friends from Netflix. They’re also bringing along a variety of older content like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air for it. The streaming service is set to launch in the spring of 2020. WB has written up a blog post about the coming content for the service.
I probably won’t buy this service. But, if they package in all the old WB, CW, HBO, and whatever else they can dredge up content wise it will probably be a pretty good deal. The problem facing WB is that they now have three streaming services in HBO, DC Universe, and the upcoming HBO Max. There are also rumors of more Warner Brothers streaming services on the way. All of their content is all over the place when people like things simple and easy and you ain’t going to get people to pay out the nose for all of these. I’m also curious about what will happen to the old HBO content on Amazon Prime as that will probably vanish at some point and will greatly hurt Prime as they still struggle for good content.
Lupin is back and in a new form as an animated 3D movie. The first Japanese trailer dropped showing off a sharp yet cartoonish looking film. It will be the first 3D animated movie and fittingly is also called Lupin III: The First. It appears it will be coming out on December 6th, 2019 to Japanese theaters.
I’m usually pretty hesitant when it comes to a major shift in animation when it comes to film, for example all of “live action” adaptations of Disney’s cartoons haven’t remotely interested me. This however, looks good and I like that the 3D models look sharp and yet retained their cartoonish nature. My only worry is if it will come to western markets which I hope that it does comes to other markets so that other people can enjoy it.
In sad news the crazy character actor Rip Torn, known for his roles in Men in Black, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and The Larry Sanders Show has passed away. He was 88 years old. The New York Times has a lovely piece covering Mr. Torn’s amazing career if you’re interested.
There will be no more dodging of dodgeballs for Rip. I loved him and all the characters he played. He always came across as a character and a treat to watch as he played his part. He will be sorely missed.
