Rising like an angry sun is this weeks video game news, releases, and a slap dash quick buck of entertainment news. Not that video games and angry suns have anything to do with one another unless you’re a fan of Super Mario’s angry sun or are excited that it is coming to Super Mario Maker 2. Anyway, this will be my mad blog post for May 12th to the 18th, 2019. Please enjoy.
RAGE 2 –
You are the last Ranger, known as Walker, in a world filled with mutants because an asteroid struck earth. Much of humanity has been wiped out but what remains has settled into wasteland pockets of rancid civilization that vie for power. The Authority have claimed the most power and try to rule everyone. They will use any means to get more power and stay there including using you to do their dirty work. The game takes place 30 years after the original game and has some returning characters. It plays out as a first person shooter. It was developed by Avalanche Studios with id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks on May 14th, 2019. The game released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
A Plague Tale: Innocence –
An action adventure stealth game with plenty of horror to go with it. The inquisition is after Hugo for his blood. You play as Amicia as you must flee to the country side with your brother Hugo after their father Robert is murdered. There they find plague rats and horrors as they try to survive against all odds and to protect Hugo from everyone including himself. Released on the Xbox One, PC, and PS4 after being developed by Asobo Studio and published by Feature Home Interactive it released on May 14th, 2019.
Super Mario Maker 2 got its own special Nintendo Direct video. It features a story mode, co-op building plus online competitive and fun modes, and plenty of new elements to build with. Nintendo also will be limiting those that are able to upload levels to those that have a Nintendo Online account, but you can order a special edition of the game for ten dollars more and get a year of online. The other big news that came out of this direct was the Vouchers, which allows you to buy two games at a discounted price. You buy a pack of vouchers, they come in two, for 99.99 USD and can exchange those for games. Specifically you use one voucher on one game and then the second on another game. This potentially saves you 20 USD for retail price for games on the digital store, but you also have to have a Nintendo Online account to get this deal. Super Mario Maker 2 will be coming to the Switch on June 28th, 2019.
This looks like a pretty well shaped game, giving players lots to play with in creation and for those just interested crazy Mario levels. Of course it didn’t give everything that everyone wanted as there is no over world map design to combine levels that players have been clambering for. But, overall a solid looking game that should give players a lot of playing time.
The studio in India known as Dhruva Interactive is changing hands from the failing Starbreeze to Rockstar Games. The company was bought for 7.9 million dollars. They will continue to work on their own projects, while also working with new projects at Rockstar Games India. Dhruva Interactive was purchased in 2016 by Starbreeze. This story comes from GamesIndustry.biz where you can find out much more.
It is sad to see Starbreeze fall so fast that they’re shedding companies and pretty much everything to stay afloat. It’s good that Dhruva Interactive doesn’t have to stick around and will continue to make games and art for other games as they have a long successful track record of doing.
Skull and Bones the upcoming pirate multiplayer ship combat game from Ubisoft has been hit by a new delay as the studio tries to correct course to make this as great of game as possible. It will also miss the 2019 E3 which is under a month away at this point.
I don’t think that this game is going to turn into vaporware but it certainly does feel like that is what’s happening to it. I was interested in this game when it was first announced, but I have slowly lost interest and haven’t seen much of anything from it since last E3 if I remember correctly. Hopefully, it turns out well and can come out, but it feels like it is on a very long road to get there.
Sony and Microsoft are teaming up? Simply put yes they are. But mostly so that they can explore cloud gaming and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). This effort is centered around Microsoft’s Azure and how it might work to bring content streaming to consoles. The other exploration is focused on semiconductors and A.I. and linking it with cloud services and computing. Sony is helping by bringing their cutting edge image sensors and semiconductors to the process so that they can both benefit from the new technology. Announced via a Microsoft blog post, you can check it out for the whole story if that interests you.
This is cool news and its good to see companies are willing to work together despite their differences. It reminds me a bit of when Ford and GM teamed up to make a ten speed automatic transmission that they both could use though they each made their own special transmission out of what they learned by working together. I could easily see something similar happening here, where they work together on something good and create their own version of it based on what they made together.
SEGA has announced a few more of the games that will be coming to the U.S. version of the SEGA Genesis Mini console. Ten games in total which include: Landstalker, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Beyond Oasis, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, Vectorman, and Wonder Boy in Monster World. The little mini-console is currently only a pre-order item as it goes on sale on September 19, 2019 for 79.99 USD. Plus there are ten more games that have yet to be announced. Head on over to good old Variety.com to find out all of the games so far.
Well the first problem is that they have a fighting game, which isn’t the best version of that game. Add in that the console comes with only three button and a start button, where as most fighting games use six buttons. And well it isn’t a good look. There is an officially licensed retro controller with six buttons coming from a third party. It will work with the mini Genesis. Now, I know that SEGA might not be able to get the rights to certain things, thus we get the versions of the games that we get. And they are getting interesting games in that Wily Wars is a rare game. Overall to me this looks good but not ultimately worth the price so far. But that could easily change in a heartbeat.
A reboot of the SAW film series appears to be under way with comedian Chris Rock leading the way for Lionsgate & Twisted Pictures. James Wan who become known for his horror movies will also be a producer on reboot. This report comes in from Deadline.com.
I didn’t expect to hear the name Chris Rock attached to a horror movie reboot project. Then again I didn’t expect Jordan Peele to make a powerhouse in the horror genre either. It could be good or bad, its way to early to tell how this will turn out or if anything will be made at all. I will point out that it seems really soon for a reboot of the series, and I’m not entirely sure what is so new that they can bring it back to life. But, I give them props for trying.
The upcoming fall show Prodigal Son which will be airing on Fox got its first trailer. It stars Thomas Payne as Malcolm Bright a young man haunted by his past and his father. He works as a profiler the NYPD helping to solve twisted cases. Michael Sheen, the British actor not the American actor, plays Payne’s father and a serial killer known as “The Surgeon”.
I want to like this trailer, I really do as Michael Sheen could be amazing in this role. The problem is that it feels like and probably is a procedural where they do a case of the week thing. When I hear the premise I want a long form show that is mostly about the father and son sparring intelligence wise. I fear that this will concentrate mostly on the current case they’re working on and somehow link it back to the dad. Or worse, the dad only gets a few episodes before they concentrate solely on the cases. I want this to be good, but I fear so much that it will not be good.
Amazon has decided to cancel their version of the live adaptation of The Tick! which has lasted for two seasons starring Griffin Newman and Peter Serafinowicz as Arthur and Tick. No reason was given for the cancellation, but the creators of the show are trying to keep it alive by shopping it to another streaming service or television network. The show had its pilot run back in 2016 when Amazon was green lighting projects through their fan voting program. Amazon released part of season one in August of 2017 followed up by part two in February of 2018. The second season dropped on March 5, 2019. This was announced via a Tweet from the creator Ben Edlund.
I wish I could say I was surprised by this news, but I’m not. Amazon seems to hate comedy these days going only for dramas. In fact they only have two comedy shows going in Transparent which is ending and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The rumors are the show got axed because of politics at the Amazon Studios. There was reportedly some favoritism shown to The Tick! during the previous regime at the studio which led to some bad blood lingering around the studio. No idea if that’s true or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me. It will however make me disappointed in the studio and is a mark against them and the Jennifer Salke as the leader who should not allow such things to happen. The only other thing against the show was its cost. And since Amazon seems willing to pour money into Lord of the Rings and The Expanse I don’t see why money would be an issue for the show.
We have a new Batman potentially for the upcoming Matt Reeves movie. It appears that Robert Pattinson will be donning the cowl of the caped crusader. Or is it Nicholas Hoult who will be taking the role? It hasn’t been completely decided but those two are the top contenders despite reports that Pattinson was in fact cast as Batman. TheWrap.com has the story on the mayhem that’s gone down.
Despite Robert Pattinson being marred in his career by the Twilight franchise he has apparently is a good actor according to many. He does a lot of indie films, and does his roles well which is all you can ask for. I don’t want to judge Hoult as the only movie I’ve seen him in is Mad Max Fury Road and he plays more a crazy character in that movie so it would be hard to compare him to a Bruce Wayne/Batman. I find that it doesn’t help to say a person can or cannot do a role because for the most part we don’t know how they’ll be directed or what the script will have them doing. Either way, I’m curious to see what comes from this as I want a new Batman based around the detective aspect that seems so lost lately in the live action films.
I think that’s about it for this weeks blogging post. So, I’ll say thank you for stopping by and taking a look around at what I ramble on about.
