Whee, a breezy week in the world of video game news along with some crazy entertainment news stuff.

Boop. It’s time for a new post blogging about the game news, entertainment news, and some game releases for the week of March 31st to April 6th, 2019. I cover the stuff that caught my interest and I felt worth sharing for all those out there.

Game Releases:

Islanders

A simple low polygon game where you have a randomly generated island and your task is to manage to build a city on it. It is a city builder style of game that shades more towards puzzle then straight city builder. It was created by Grizzly Games for PC and they also published it. The game released on April 4th, 2019.

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator

A strategy game where you set up ridiculous battles and then watch as the mayhem unfolds as the battle takes place. You don’t control the fight but set it up to try and see how the best way to win is. The game entered Early Access on April 1st, 2019 after being developed and published by Landfall Game for PC.

Game News:

Rage 2 is going a bit old school in an odd way. The developers are bringing back cheat codes that can be unlocked in game for in game currency. No you don’t have to pay for them with actually money. The cheat codes will be available via a wandering wizard in the game and they rotate in and out of circulation but once you’ve bought them they’re yours to use. Also if you buy Deluxe Edition of the game you get some of the cheat codes already unlocked. PCGamer.com has the breakdown on what kind of cheats they’ve announced so far.

It’s kind of a cool way to bring back cheat codes that used to be so popular with games. Hell I remember the Game Shark devices you could get just to have cheat codes on console without all the work of experimenting to see what would happen. It’s a fun little extra for those that want it and if you don’t want to use it you can ignore it.

If you love Civilization 6 and own both the PC version and the Switch version they can now share cloud saves. You’ll have to set up a 2K account to do this, but once done its as easy as loading a save. There is no word on if the PC’s DLC will work on the Switch as that port doesn’t have as much content as the PC version.

This is a cool feature to have on a game. Now the only questions that remain are if it has any effect on DLC, which one would imagine it would have to. And if the game will come to other consoles? It would be nice to have for them as well.

Fans will grumble once again as they have learned that the upcoming Borderlands 3 which is due to release on September 13, 2019 will have a six month exclusive period on the Epic Game Store for PC.

I’m surprised that the release date is so close as many games are announced years in advance and you wind up waiting forever for them. I suppose Gearbox didn’t feel like it was a good idea marketing wise to make people wait when they have waited so long for any news that they could grab onto. So, take the good with the bad. Also review bombing the previous games in the franchise just because there is an exclusive period just shows how immature gamers are when it comes to games.

Epic will continue to buy exclusives though they say the length of exclusivity will change per deal that the publisher/developer makes with Epic. It can range from a year to much less as per the deal for Borderlands 3 which is only six months instead of yearly deals that most games seem to have. You can read more over on Endgadget.com.

It sucks that Epic feels like this is the best way to break Steam’s stranglehold on the digital storefront. I wish that they didn’t have to go this route as I don’t know how well it will work for them in the long run.

Snapchat the picture messaging service is getting into game business with Snap Games available for the Snapchat app as of Thursday April 4th, 2019. It is set to offer a platform for which you access a library of quick social games for you and your friends to play together. These games will be from the likes of Spry Fox, Zynga, and some others. This news was broken by Gamasutra.com who fully explain what Snap Games will be.

It isn’t a bad idea to put social games on a social app to get friends to do stuff together when they’re already usually doing stuff together. I don’t know if it will take off or not, but it seems like one of those nice things to have even if you don’t wind up using it ever. Though if it does never get used it will probably disappear just as quickly as it came about.

The Duke of Sussex better known as Prince Harry has spoken out about the video game Fortnite saying that it is addicting and should be banned from the U.K. He also said similar things about social media which he feels is dangerous to youths and at times worse than opiates and alcohol. If you wish to read more you can head over to CNBC who has a report on what the Prince was doing and why he’s saying such things.

I fear the prince is stepping out onto a precarious platform with little way to back down from his comments. Yes, it is true that games can become addicting to people. It is also true that Fortnite hasn’t been proven to be any more addicting than any other game.I’m wondering if this isn’t a case of heard about a popular game and thus one should be against said game sort of case. If it is or isn’t I can’t say, but banning a game is not a great solution.

Nintendo’s VR Labo kit will soon work with two full fledged games in Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With Mario you get short snippets of a mini-game, with Zelda you can play and explore the world of Breath of the Wild. Both updates are completely free, but you’ll need the Labo VR kits to use it.

It’s nice that Nintendo is offering these free updates to their game. But there is still the question of how well one can hold up the Labo set for a set amount of time to play the games. Plus the problems of visuals since the screen of the Switch isn’t a high quality one.

Entertainment News:

If you’re in the mood for a mad maniacal movies, well DC cinematic released The Joker trailer for the Joaquin Phoenix film that is all about the mad Batman villain. It’s a teaser to give a feel for what might be a character study of a movie, or might just be a madhouse of a movie that is coming on October 4th, 2019.

Jeez this is going to be a dark ominous film going by this teaser and hopefully it stays that way. I’m looking forward to it and I’m still not fully sure of what the film will be about. I have my guesses and theories about what’s going to happen and I want to see if I got anywhere near right with my guesses.

Zombies never seem to lose their luster and liveliness since their introduction to the world. A new horror comedy called The Dead Don’t Die starring Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny, Adam Driver, and the ever changing Tilda Swinton dropped a trailer on April 1st, 2019. It is about a zombie outbreak and the police having to deal with what happening. The movie arrives in theaters on June 14th, 2019.

I was very hesitant about this trailer because it dropped on April 1, 2019 and I wasn’t sure if it was a prank joke or not. Now it seems real enough and interesting enough to talk about. I liked what I saw overall the humor looks dry and on point. Yeah, this one has me excited for it.

The Nicholas Winding Refn’s TV series that seems to have been forever in the making, Too Old to Die Young, has an official trailer and release date. The show follows a cop who works for drug lords and gets caught up in dealing with the repercussions of a death gone wrong. It stars Miles Teller, Jena Malone, John Hawkes, Augusto Aguilera and Christina Rodlo. The series arrives on Amazon Prime on June 14th, 2019 and looks to delivery another bath of neon pulp action that Refn has become so known for.

It’s kind of hard to get a feel for the series unless you already known and love Mr. Refn’s style. And this series does seem very visual, very focused on what he does and brings to his craft. I don’t know what to full think of this series other then it has me curious. I’m not sure if I’ll like it but I can see myself getting blown away by it if it manages to nail the story and visuals.

The Cowboy Bebop live action remake for Netflix has cast its main characters. Spike Speigel will be played by John Cho, Mustafa Shakir is going to be the character Jet, meanwhile playing the harsh only in it for herself Faye Valentine is Daniella Pineda. The villain Vicious is being played by Alex Hassell. One casting spot remains vacant for the main cast in Ed, the all over the place kid hacker who seems like they’re on drugs most of the time. Hit up Variety.com for the report on the live action remake.

I don’t mind when remakes happen as they never take away from the original series or one off that they sprang from. And I won’t change here. It’s fine that this series exists, that said none of this casting is particularly inspiring to me. I get that we’re going to get a lot of changes from the animation to live action, but this news just makes me shrug about what’s been announced so far. I’ll probably forget about it until a trailer comes out and then probably won’t like it because it has changed so much from the original. I will of course try to keep an open mind, but its hard when you have such a loving memory of the original. Also, if the music isn’t even closely similar to Yoko Kanno’s then the creator’s will probably have a riot on their hands from the fans.

Not the crazy week that was last week, but still some interesting stuff happened and was worth talking about.
