The weekly week of blog posting about what’s happening in the world of video games and a slash dash touch of entertainment is back. This time I’m covering the final week of March 2019 that being the 24th to the 30th with the 31st slipping just out of my grasp into next week’s blog post. I’ll be covering the releases, news, and entertainment news that caught my interest and thought worth re-sharing and getting out there once again. With all that done and said, on with the madness.
MLB: The Show 19 –
Baseball is back in the swing of things and Sony’s exclusive baseball franchise is of course back for another go around. The game has received improvements in the visuals and all around game play to improve user experience. You can create a player and bring them from the minors all the way to the big leagues, or play as a GM creating a dynasty for your team, or one of the other modes. Released for the PS4 on March 26th, 2019 after being developed by SIE San Diego Studios and then published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Yoshi’s Crafted World –
Once again an adventure of a lifetime has cropped up for Yoshi in an unusual world when Baby Bowser and Kamek try to steal the powerful gem hidden on Yoshi’s Island. This gem has the power to make dreams come true, and it gets broken into many shards when the two baddies tried to steal it. Now Yoshi and friends must travel the worlds to find and reunite the gem shards. Made by Good-Feel and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch it came out on March 29th, 2019.
Tropico 6 –
The city builder that sets you up to be a ruler on a tropical island and you have plenty of choices to make that might pull you more towards the communist or capitalist style of government. Of course outside influences are only one aspect as you must keep the people of your island happy, and try to stamp out the revolutionaries that never seem to go away. Released on March 29th, 2019 by Limbic Entertainment and published by Kalypso Media for the PC. A console version for Xbox One and PS4 is planned for a release later in the year.
An open world adventure role playing game where you fight massive bosses and explore as the cold and warm greatly effect your character. Fight and explore, you’ll have little time to worry about anything else as the world continually challenges you. Released on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC after being developed by Nine Dots Studio and published by Deep Silver it released on March 26th, 2019.
Risk of Rain 2 –
A surprise launch onto early access. The series returns to the rogue-like fight only this time instead of pixel 2D graphics we get a fully blown 3D world. You can fight your way through the unforgiving world solo or with a team of friends as you try to find a way to escape the planet. Launched onto early access on March 28th, 2019 for PC by developer Hopoo Games and publisher Gearbox Publishing.
Apple is shaking things up with a newly announced service for iOS. Called the Apple Arcade, it will be a monthly service that will give you access to curated games on iPad, iPhone’s, Apple TV, and Mac with no ads or in-game micro-transactions. You can play all your games anywhere both with an internet connection and without, plus you can share access with up to six family members. The service plans to launch in the fall of 2019 and Apple has yet to announce how much it will cost to use. If you head over to the Apple Arcade website you’ll find out much more about it.
Apple loves to claim that they’re changing the world with their services, except Humble Bundle Monthly and EA Access are pretty similar services. Maybe not exactly similar but the same general idea. That said, if the games can prove to be worth it and Apple can attract good developers then this could be a great thing for them. It just needs to be priced reasonably.
Microsoft has followed a bit in the steps of Nintendo, a weird statement to make but here we are. They have released a video called the ID@Xbox Game Pass that showcases the indie games upcoming for the Xbox One console and that will be at PAX East 2019.
This was a nice short video, almost a bit too short for my liking. Still a good look at some small games that could use some love. Hopefully the next version of this video features more games and more developers to talk about game play.
Sony also have gone to doing a video ala Nintendo Direct style, where they show off a bunch of upcoming stuff for the PS4. With quite a push for their VR headset with a variety of games that they have coming. Stuff like Iron Man VR and No Man’s Sky VR. The No Man’s Sky DLC is going to be free pack coming soon.
A good start for their video series it kept it to the games and showed some game play which is what most people want to see. It would be nice to see some game developers talk about their games, or less emphasis on VR. I understand Sony really wants to push their headset for the PS4 but these style videos do better when there is a variety of content to keep people happy. That’s just my take on the matter.
A new Lord of the Rings game will be coming, but perhaps not in the usual manner or about a character you’d think about. Lord of the Rings: Gollum will probably be a point and click adventure from German studio Daedaelic and will be about Gollum. This news comes from Thehollywoodreporter.com.
This could be quite cool, and a different look at the world of Lord of the Rings. I’ll be curious to see what comes of this and if it remains a PC only type game or if it comes to consoles as well.
The return of Borderlands has been teased by Gearbox Software for the past week or so. They have held a reveal event at PAX East 2019 to show of the updated Borderlands Game of the Year Edition, along withBorderlands: The Handsome Collection which includes the Pre-quel and the second game. If you own the first game you’ll get the update for free, same with if you own the collection. Otherwise you can buy the updated graphical games. There isalso a board game called Borderlands Tiny Tina Robot Tea Party Of course the big news is that the third game is now officially announced. Finally, there was a little love shown to Switch console in that they’re getting a port of Bulletstorm.
The presentation and live stream issues aside. All of this looks pretty cool and people finally get the third sequel that they’ve been begging for since the second game dropped. I want to see more from the game so that I know that there is a difference aside from many many more weapons to go pew pew with. And of course the story will be different. I am slightly surprised by the Bulletstorm port, it is a weird little game to bring over as it never was super popular, but perhaps this is Gearbox testing the market to see if they should bring over more games to the Switch.
A new horror game has been announced and will be arriving just in time for Halloween. It is Moons of Madness and will be about a space explorer on a moon far from earth and potentially going mad. Or is there something else on the moon with them?
It’s sort of creepy in the typical horror game fashion with lots of weird things happening and creatures that don’t seem right in a terrible menacing way. I’m slightly curious to see more of it, and I have hopes that it isn’t just a jump scare style horror game as I want games to evolve beyond that.
Control got a game play trailer showing your super hero like abilities to help you as you explore the world around you that doesn’t like you very much. This game comes from Remedy Entertainment who is known for Alan Wake and Quantum Break with the game being published by 505 Games and is set for release on August 27, 2019 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
Neat looking is what comes to my mind when I watched the trailer. The superpower aspect reminds me of Saints Row but in a more serious setting. It looks interesting and apparently the game is more about exploring then combat, so hopefully you use those superpowers to help you uncover ways of exploring.
Former founder of Take-Two, Ryan Brant, who left the company fully in 2006 has passed away at age 49. He also formerly worked at Rockstar as the CEO for a while until 2006 when he left entirely. The news came from Gamasutra.com.
It is always a sad day to hear about someone passing. My condolences to his family.
It’s time for more Shantae, with the fifth game in the series having been official announced via a Tweet. It will be coming to PC, the major consoles, and the Apple Arcade this fall.
I’ve never played any of the Shantae games. I’ve always heard people like and enjoy the series so that makes me curious to see what they come up. I want to know what they’re going to change or if this is just going to take what worked so well on the last game and continue to tweak and improve those little things.
Layoff’s have hit EA Games mostly in the marketing, analytics, and publishing. This has resulted in the closure of the EA Japan and EA Russian offices. In total 350 jobs have been lost as EA re-concentrates its efforts on games. This story comes from Kotaku with Gamesindustry.biz with the report that the Japan and Moscow offices closing.
Usually when you hear of layoffs it comes at the expensive of game designers, artists, programmers and so forth. It makes for an interesting bit of news that it is someone else within the industry but no less terrible that people lost their jobs. I hope that this leads to good things for everyone, those that lost their jobs land on their feet, and that EA can straighten out whatever has gone wrong.
If you have Amazon Prime and are in a market where this also gets you the net benefit of Twitch Prime there is some good news for those that own a Nintendo Switch. Amazon and Nintendo have partnered to give away a years worth of Nintendo online service. Now, the catch is if you already have an account that is a family plan you can’t get it. If you just a single individual account you can get this freebie it comes in a voucher that contains three months and then a voucher for nine months once the first three months is up. This deal is running from March 28th, 2019 to September 24th, 2019. You’ll need to go to Twitch and your Prime
A great little deal for those that want to try out the so far meager offerings that make up Nintendo’s online service. It’s worth checking out if you plan to buy a Switch in the upcoming months, or just haven’t wanted to take the plunge for the service in the first place.
The well loved and beloved Kaz Hirai is stepping down as a chairman of Sony and leaving the company to retire. Formerly he was the CEO and helped steer Sony when elevated to the job in 2011 after several successful stints with the Playstation brand. This story also comes from Kotaku.
I hope Mr. Hirai has a nice retirement its been well earned after all he’s done for Sony. It won’t be the last that we see him around Sony as he’ll be a senior advisor. That said, kick back and enjoy life Mr. Hirai.
Changes are coming to Humble Bundle but it comes at the very top of the organization. Co-Founder’s, Jeffery Rosen and John Graham, are stepping down. They were the respective CEO and COO of the company. Now stepping in to lead the company is Alan Patmore with a variety of game business experience. Patmore previously worked at Kixeye as chief product officer, Zynga as a general manager, and at Double Fine as vice president of product development. Once more this report comes from GameIndustry.biz who have all you need to know about what’s going on.
Well I wish them both the best and hope that Humble Bundle can continue its giving ways under new management. I know that they’re now owned by IGN Entertainment who is owned by the Ziff Davis company so for a while people were curious to see if changes would occur. They haven’t so far, but who knows what will happen in the future.
The mini-console crazy continues. This time with an official SEGA Genesis from SEGA. It will be plug and play with 40 games, releases on September 19th, 2019, and retails for 79.99. Some of the games are: Ecco the Dolphin, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beasts, and with more to revealed later.
It’s a bit expensive for my taste, but will have more games then the SNES mini and looks better then the PS Classic mini thing. I don’t know how well it will do but it will probably have quite the following if it comes up with games that haven’t been ported to PC’s and current consoles.
It has been known for a while that Apple was going to join in the streaming wars with whatever their plan was. Now they have announced, or rather slightly shown what you might expect from the service. Apple brought out a bunch of creators to talk about the shows they are working on and announced the service will be launch in the fall of 2019. There was no price announced for it.
Some might say that the event showcase was a little obnoxious, grandiose, and over the top. And I agree with that. This didn’t sell me on the idea of buying Apple TV+ subscription and I found myself bored watching the live stream event. Granted the sizzle reel that they released looked good and reminded me of say a BBC style sizzle reel. It just didn’t feel like it was enough and with no price point announced, who really cares?
Some say that YouTube will be getting out of the streaming wars and have been quietly dialing back their original content. YouTube have denied this with a statement that they have content on the way. The Canadian division of Reuters has the report on the ending of YouTube shows, while Bloomberg Canada had YouTube’s denial of the report.
Well I’m not sure if they are or are not leaving, but it always seemed a bit weird that YouTube was trying to make shows. I get that Google already had a video platform and it made the most sense to just use that, but the content never really set itself out aside from when it first launched. I have heard so little about their TV shows as of late that it’s easy to forget that they have stuff compared to Netflix and to a lesser extent Amazon.
Epix the U.S. pay to watch TV channel has released a teaser for their upcoming series Pennyworth. The show is all about Alfred Pennyworth prior to his career as a butler to the Wayne family. And yes this series is a prequel of sorts to Batman where Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s butler. The series will be out in the summer of 2019.
This teaser looks better than I was expecting it to be. Honestly I didn’t know what I expected, other then something that looked like an average TV show. This looked slick, and at least has caught my interest to see what they’re going to do with it.
An exhaustive week of news to write down for all to read plus think about and its now completed. Thank you for visiting my weird little blog. I appreciate it. Comments, questions, and suggestions are certainly welcome below or to me on my Twitter @Snipehockey, or emailing me at Lostvideogamesblog@gmail.com. With that goodnight, good day, and rest
