And now for a week of gaming news, some entertainment news, and gaming releases. This is the week of August 26 to September 1, 2018 rounded up in a blog post. Also, please note that I cover the stuff that I find interesting and worth talking about. With all that now said, lets get on with it.
Two Point Hospital –
A hospital building and management simulator with a bit of a twisted sense of humor. It is the spiritual successor to Theme Hospital. Developed for Mac, Linux, and PC by Two Point Studios and published by SEGA. It came out on August 30, 2018.
Strange Brigade –
A co-op shooter set in the 1930’s where you play treasure hunters. This of course means the mythical creatures are going to come out of the wood work or stone work to stop you from taking their treasure. Released on August 28, 2018 by Rebellion Developments who both developed and published it. It came out on Xbox One, PC, and PS4.
Donut County –
A game in which in play a hole in the ground. Literally. You go around levels getting things to drop into the hole and growing the hole so that you can swallow bigger objects. Created by Ben Espositio and published by Annapurna Interactive and released on August 28, 2018 for PS4, PC, Linux, and Mac.
Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate –
A high definition port of the 3DS game. You hunt monsters and dangerous creatures that plague the lands. You’ll need special armor sets to help you fight different creatures and to buff your created character. Originally a 3DS game published in 2015/2016 it now comes to the Switch on August 28, 2018. It was created and published by CAPCOM.
Of course the key news this week for many people is the first public footage of Cyberpunk 2077. The stream showed off a bit of the customization, combat, and general feel of the world that the developers are creating for the game.
I am not a big fan of the footage. And I am well aware that it is still a ways away from being complete. But, to me the only thing that impressed me was the willingness of the studio to do nudity in their game. Otherwise I’ve seen a lot of what Cyberpunk has to offer in other games. I’m sure that developer CD Projekt will have a very refined game by the time it comes out that nails down all of those aspects. However, my hype for this game has slowly faded from the first reveal to patient curiosity.
EA Games in the wake of the shooting during the Madden tournament have canceled the remaining preliminary events while they look over security measures. They’re also donating one million dollars to the families of the victims and will be holding a live stream on September 6, 2018 where gamers can donate to the families as well. Business Insider has the full story.
It’s sad that such an event occurred and that this has come about as a result of it. EA is doing a good thing with the donations and figuring out how to tighten security so that such an event will likely never happen again.
In less somber news, EA’s has been pushed back from its original release date of October 19, 2018 to November 20, 2018. This move puts its release after the big games of Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout76, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This story comes courtesy of CNBC.com
The weird part about all of this is that EA’s stock dropped as a result of the delay. But, the game is only being put off by a month and still lands before black Friday. Why would investors sell off? I’m definitely of the opinion that many investors don’t know what they’re doing. As for the delay itself, no big deal really just a few extra days to squash bugs and perfect things. Hopefully it doesn’t follow in the footsteps of Battlefront II which seemed to be one disaster after another when it launched.
Nintendo held an indie direct video event and then held another one for one of their first original IP mobile games, i.e. iOS and Android games. Some highlights from the indie direct include Untitled Goose Game, Bastion, Transistor, and Hyper Light Drifter. The new IP will be called Dragalia Lost which is an RPG. You play a character who has the blood of a dragon that allows him to turn into a dragon and fight to save the world.
I’m not sure about Nintendo’s new mobile game. From ym experience their games feel about as nickel and diming as other mobile games which Miyamoto has been against. I’ll wait and see, but I doubt I’ll get into it. On the indie side of things however, we get lots of ports of games for the Switch which is good cause good games should be on the platform and bad because you want newer games to play. I will say that I was completely charmed over by Untitled Goose Game. There is just something so fun and different about it that I bought into the idea.
The Binding of Isaac is a game that just won’t die. Both the creator and the fan base happily keep bringing the game back in new iterations. It is called Binding of Issac: Repentance and it will be the last DLC for Rebirth version of Issac and features the Antibirth mod.
More Binding of Issac is usually a good thing. I’ll have to wait and see what this exactly adds to the game and how much it will cost before making a plunge on it.
Square-Enix is teaming up with Chinese company Tencent to make triple AAA games. Per the agreement between the two companies they will create a whole new studio to create these games. As if now however, they are still working on finalizing the agreement. Check out Gematsu.com to get a feel for the deal.
This is a bit of a surprise. I don’t think anyone thought that Square-Enix a pretty big company would need to team up with another company to make a game. But, it is probably one of those things where someone else footing at least part of the bill makes it easier to bring about new IP’s. Now the issue is will Tencent continue with this deal after their stock got hit due to China ordering a limit on games.
Speaking of China and Tencent, the addiction to gaming in the country has gotten to the point where the government has felt the need to step in. This has resulted in the Chinese deciding to limit the amount of online games allowed in. The Chinese reckon that this will help curb game time and improve kids overall health. As a result many publicly traded companies saw their shares tumble and this includes Tencent. This comes from a Bloomberg.com report.
Yikes. I do hope that these Chinese children wake up from the stupor that is gaming addiction. I don’t know if this measure will help or not, but I hope it does.
Sony have given a new reason as to why they block cross play between the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Their grand reasoning is that, “PS4 is the best user experience and best place to play.” This comes directly from Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida. Read all about it from Independent.co.uk
Wow. I didn’t think that Sony was capable of making themselves sound any worse about this situation and then they went and did it. I honestly have no idea how Sony thought such comments were smart or that they could get away with them. I believe that even Sony Playstation fans are not going to be happy with these comments.
HBO and its sister company Cinemax have been quietly removing some of their erotic content. Stuff like Taxi Cab Confessions and Real Sex will no longer be a part of their brand as their wasn’t high demand for it. Wander over to Deadline.com to catch up on what’s going on.
This is kind of sad in the end of an era kind of way. These shows helped people open up about sexuality and exploration. That said, the internet has largely taken over erotic subjects reducing demand for it on TV. I just hope that this doesn’t wind up making things veer more towards a return to prudishness instead of opening up about likes and dislikes.
DC’s Streaming service will be launching on September 15, 2018 with TV shows, back comic books, merchandise, and forums for fans to use to communicate with other fans and creators. The first show, Titans, will launch on October 3, 2018. Head over to the Verge to read about and see what’s being offered.
Much like with Disney’s streaming service I remain on the fence about if this will succeed in some great fashion. I’m a bit curious about their shows, but I just don’t know yet. Plus there seems to be so little fan fare compared to everyone drooling over Disney. It’s weird, you’d think that DC would be screaming from the top of their lungs about the launch. It has been pretty quiet overall though.
Nickelodeon will tap into 1990’s cartoons, shows, and general nostalgia as it adds a bunch of older shows to its streaming service. Called, NickSplat it will cost you 5.99 a month and features old Nickelodeon shows. Ew.com has the full report on what to expect.
As much as nostalgia pulls at me to jump on this. I can’t say that I will. It’s a good idea, to get people watching their shows. However you do want a balance of old and new while this just seems to be trending on the old for nostalgia and to draw people in. Time will tell if it becomes a place for their old shows and just old shows.
Justin Roiland who has become quite famous for developing the Rick and Morty cartoon has signed a deal with Hulu for a new show. It’s called Solar Opposites and is about an alien family from a better planet coming to live in middle America because they seek refuge. This comes after Cartoon Network re-upped Rick and Morty for 70 more episodes earlier this year. Go over to Variety.com to see what the deal is.
Well this will be interesting though I don’t know how soon we will see Roland’s new show. I’m curious to see if Rick and Morty are weird and crazy because of Roland, or is it because of Dan Harmon, or is it a little bit of both of them. Also, it sounds like a kind of drab version of American Dad from the description,
Creator of the cartoon Gravity Falls, Alex Hirsch has a new deal in place. He is taking his talents to Netflix in a multiyear deal that involves both cartoon shows and feature films. This comes as Netflix is pushing heavily into the animated sector after their high profile release of Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. The Hollywood Reporter has the story on this one.
I never watched Gravity Falls despite hearing fans rave about it. It never really appealed to me. That said, I find Netflix’s push into cartoons interesting. They have had some success with Big Mouth and Disenchantment. But both are more adult oriented. I wonder if they’re going to go for a more kid friendly show with Hirsch or if he’s going to continue the adult cartoon trend, I’ll be curious to see what happens.
That will finish another week of mad gaming and entertainment. Thank you for stopping by and taking a look around at my mad scribbling.
