I’m back to talk about video game madness – Releases, Gaming News – for the week of July 8 to 14, 2018 and it will only be the stuff that I found interesting. Plus quite a chunk of entertainment news thrown in as well.
Game Releases –
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker:
Lead Toad on a grand puzzle adventure across small levels as you track the villainous crow Wingo who kidnapped Toadette along with a Power Star. Developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo and published by Nintendo it has been released on the Wii U and 3DS but we now get a Switch version. It came out on July 13, 2018.
Eight stories play out in this grand turn based role playing game. This game has set itself apart through its 2D-HD visuals reminiscent of the SNES era of RPGS. Developed by Acquire and Square Enix it is published by Square Enix in Japan and by Nintendo elsewhere in the world. Released on July 13, 2018 it came out on the Switch.
Gaming News –
Valve in the Netherlands is making a slight tweak to trading once again in response to loot boxes. They have re-enabled trading for the game CS:GO however now they have disabled the ability to purchase loot boxes. You can learn more over on eurogamer.net.
Yeah, I can see why they decided to shut down loot box buying and enabled users to trade items again. It is a frustrating because the matter is so unsettled so gamers are going to have to deal with companies all trying different solutions and then back tracking to find other solutions that they think work better.
In Nintendo news they had two stories pop up. First there is the report that the original one hundred and fifty one Pokemon are all getting turned into plushie dolls. But currently these dolls are only planned for Japan. The other piece of news is that Nintendo wants to have 20 to 30 indie games a week coming out for the Switch e-shop. Check out plushie news on Pocket Gamer or see what Nintendo’s e-shop plans are via Ars Technica.
I do wish the plushies would come out world wide, as Pokemon is very popular everywhere and people have a love of plushies just look at how much attention the little yarn Yoshi attracted when it came out. Nintendo do the right thing and bring them everywhere. I don’t know about twenty to thirty games coming to the e-shop a week, or if Nintendo can wrangle that many up. It seems a bit overkill and like it will chase off some smaller developers who fear they will get lost in the mass cascade of games
Dead Cells the early access game will be leaving said early access for a full release on August 7, 2018 and fear not the developer, Motion Twin, will support the game after release. The console version will also be coming out on that date.
This is a neat looking game that I felt deserved a bit more attention. Plus it managed to get out of early access in a fairly short time period compared to some ganes.
If you’re into gaming documentaries Noclip the creators of many has decided on their next one. They will be covering Gog.com and their preservation and bringing back of old games so that they can be played today. This news came from the Noclip twitter.
We’re delighted to announce our new doc dives into the preservation work of @GOGcom. We talk to those responsible for hunting down old games, untangling their rights issues & coding them for modern PCs. Plus how their store has evolved over the years. Watch it in just two weeks! pic.twitter.com/k2Fxk87vV5

I don’t think I have ever watched any of the no-clip documentaries but this one certainly sounds interesting. It will be cool to see how deep they dig into games and the whole process of getting them to a working state.
Commandos and old real time strategy game appears like it will be making a comeback. The rights have been purchased by Kalypso Media publishers of the Tropico franchise. There is talk of completely new games in the franchise and also remasters of the old ones. Read all about it via PcGamer.com.
I only remember playing the demo of the old games and finding them fairly frustrating so I’m sort of torn between: hey cool and eh okay I guess. My other issue is that Kalypso doesn’t have the greatest of track record when it comes to publishing games with reviews tending to be all over the place. But it should also be pointed out that very few publishers have a track record of all amazing games, so Kalypso falls more towards the median.
Entertainment News –
The rumored Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips has been given the Greenlight by Warner Brothers. This will not be a big budget superhero style movie, instead giving us a lower budget and it appears at this time it won’t connect to some greater DC extended universe as it is a one off movie. Variety.com has the full report on the movie planned to shoot this fall.
Well if there is anyone who can make Joker standout once again it might be Joaquin Phoenix. It also seems that this will be a humorist sort of take since it is being directed by Todd Philips who mostly does comedies. I’m curious about this one and I have the feeling that it is going to wind up sort of a surreal experience.
RoboCop is once again making a robotic comeback with a new film this time with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp behind the camera. Find the full story over on Deadline.com.
Blomkamp has had some decent success with his short movies that he’s been doing lately, which might be what is propelling this. I’m not a big fan of his work and a sort of reboot sequel to a series that hasn’t had much life to it. There was even an already much forgotten about 2014 reboot. Overall I’m kind of meh on the whole idea.
Entertainment Weekly has released the first image of Captain Marvel… No, wait the first image of the DC movie Shazam! who is known to some people as Captain Marvel. It is a bit confusing but, the character Captain Marvel was created by Fawcett Comics in 1939. Then DC comics predecessor sued and won due to characteristic similarities with Superman and Captain Marvel. Fawcett would eventually close and the rights to the name expired thus allowing Marvel to jump in and create their Captain Marvel. Fawcett would bring back the character through DC Comics in 1972 but no longer titled as Captain Marvel, though still referred to him as such inside the comic books until recently. This movie is scheduled for release on April 5, 2019. The plot revolves around a ten year old boy who when he says a magic word he turns into a superhero and goes about saving the day. The film is being described as similar to the film Big with a family friendly tone. It will star Zachary Levi as the alter-ego superhero Shazam and Asher Angel as Billy Batson the young man who can turn into Shazam! Of course you’ll have to visit EW.com for the picture.
I generally don’t like EW set pictures as they don’t give you a feel for the movie. I am actually okay with this one as it does manage to give some insight into the movie. It gives the feeling that this movie will be silly and a bit ridiculous which is exactly what I want from such a crazy premise of a movie. It has me a bit excited that this will be a good movie.
Genndy Tartakovsky the creator of Samurai Jack is making a big push to try and bring back 2D animation in films and movies. Or he’s at least trying to bring back some hand drawn animations to give animated movies a more interesting visual look to them. This story comes from Syfy.com.
I’m all for bringing back more 2D animation in movies, however there aren’t many 2D animators left in the U.S. and those in South Korea and Japan seem heavily overworked. I don’t know if 2D animation will ever manage to make a comeback but hopefully they do and more people get into animating old school stylistically.
