November 5 to 11, 2017 a week of gaming releases and news made its way through every pore that was the week and we even got a bit of entertainment news to boot. Welcome to another weekly round of the week in gaming; this time for the aforementioned week in the opening sentence. Please note, I cover the news, releases, and entertainment things that interest me and that I thought worth passing on again. I don’t cover all that’s happened because it would be dreadfully long blog post and it would take more than a week to track down every little piece of news to report on it. Thus we get this hit list, if you will, of what’s happened. Enjoy!
Games released this week:
Sonic Forces –
Sonic is back in the 3D world and Eggman is back to his evil ways, only this time recruiting help in the form of a mysterious stranger named Infinite who manages to defeat Sonic. Created by the Sonic Team and published by SEGA the game came out on November 7, 2017. It came out on PC, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox One, and Playstation 4.
Need for Speed: Payback –
Revenge is the name of the game in this racer. You’ve been wronged and now you’re out to settle the score by racing fast cars and stealing a few along the way. It was created by Ghost Games and published by EA Games.
Demonic forces have created a hellish landscape which you must plow through using whatever guns you have on hand. The game plays out fast a loose, with lots of gun battles and gruesome finishing moves that you can use on opponents. Originally developed by ID Software, the game was ported over by developer Panic Button and published by Bethesda Softworks. The Switch version came out on November 10, 2017. It had been previously released on Playstation 4, PC, and Microsoft Xbox One.

The developer, Sunlock Studios, considers it to be a spiritual successor to Bloodlines Champion. The game is now out of Steam Early Access and is free to play for everyone who wants to try it on PC.
DLC content released:

Intel and AMD are working together. They’ll be putting together a chip that puts Intel’s CPU and AMD graphics together for laptops. The idea is to take aim at Nvidia and ultra thin laptops that are still capable of gaming sessions. You can read about the deal from Pcworld.
Certainly an interesting combo considering the two companies haven’t had the greatest of histories with one another. I think it is also important to note that this isn’t a sharing of technology deal, more of Intel buying AMD parts to put into the chip.
In more Intel and AMD news, the head of AMD’s VEGA GPU program is moving from AMD over to Intel. The aim is for Intel to create its own high end graphics unit within the company and they will be lead by Raja Koduri. This story comes from CNBC.com.
This is great news on the front of compeition as AMD and Nvidia seem a bit too comfortable in their roles with one another. However, the VEGA GPU hasn’t had the greatest of launches with many feeling it is a generation behind what Nvidia has been offering. We’ll have to wait and see if that is because of Mr. Koduri or if it was AMD not giving the team the resources needed.
Miiverse which was Nintendo’s version of a social media platform for the Wii U is now official dead and gone. The program allowed people to draw quirky images and create posts that could be shared with friends or in game. Nintendo has moved most of that media over the mobile phones. You can read about its end over on IGN.
It was a pretty cool concept that didn’t work all the well. Granted for those that got into it seemed to really fall in love with it, but for the rest it was just there as a minor distraction. It is a bit sad to see it go in the end though one had to expect that Nintendo wasn’t going to let it live on forever when they can use the money elsewhere.
Hitman the series that follows around a bald hitman as he completes hits on various targets has gotten a game of the year edition which seems to indicate that the episodic take of the game is wrapping production. IO Interactive have also said that they’ve begun production on a brand new game in the series. This story comes from Gamespot.com who has the full report for you.
A new hitman I feel is always welcome as it provides a bit of a silly adventure where you can take things seriously or just do things a bit crazily. I enjoyed the freedom the games provided even if I never managed to get things to go how I’d like them to. With all that said, I look forward to see what the new game brings.
Respawn Entertainment the makers of Titanfall are selling the company to EA Games after publisher Nexon made a buy-out offer which EA had the right of refusal and to meet the offer made, which they did. Resapwn took EA’s offer for a reported 455 million dollars. The money is split into a couple of categories, 151 million in cash for the studio, 164 million in long term equity, and 140 million in performance bonuses. Also coming out of this news is that Respawn is working on three games. There is a new entry in the Titanfall series, a new Star Wars game, and a Virtual Reality experience that’s being worked on. EA released a press release announcing the deal, which you can check out.
It feels a bit like Respawn was caught between a rock and a hard place as both EA Games or Nexon don’t have the greatest track records when it comes to owning or working with studios. They wound up taking the route that perhaps suited them the best.
Niantic the company which created a bit a phenomena last year with Pokemon GO is creating a new mobile phone game. This time it will be based around the intellectual property of Harry Potter. An even more revealing news from this is that a studio, Portkey Games, has been set up to create games and explore the world of Wizards. The whole shebang is rounded up over on WCCFTech.com.
I worry about Niantic as fans of Ingress, their original game, and Pokemon GO seem fairly unhappy with how those have turned out as of late. The thing that gets me excited is Portkey Games working on new games that explore the world of Harry Potter. Hopefully these are full experiences and not tech demo-y VR experiences that manage to just give a taste of what could be.
Capcom is working hard to make many games for the Nintendo Switch for the coming year., One announcement that has caught peoples attention is that a new Ace Attorney game. Titled — Ace Attorney: Trial Minutes – it will be coming in 2018 though they are going by fiscal year which might cover some of 2019. You can file your Objections! Or check out the story from Eurogamer.net.
As corny and off beat as some of the Ace Attorney series can be, it still has managed to endear itself to me. So, I’m looking forward to where ever the next crazy adventure/court cases take place in this world.
There a few stories out there about Disney potentially buying Fox’s TV and film divisions, while leaving the news and sports divisions to Fox. The reason many people got excited over this story was the potential return of X-Men and the Fantastic Four. X-men would return if the deal had gone through, however the Fantastic Four would not as Fox had been licensed by another company, Constantin Film, to make those movies. The deal would also include the various rights to the shows and movies created by Fox over the years which would have been a big feather in their cap when Disney launches its streaming service. MSNBC broke the story and has the full report on what’s what.
The Marvel Entertainment part getting back part of its property is fine by me, I don’t particularly care about that. What does strike fear in me is the idea of Disney creating monopoly by hording all the rights that they can get their hands on. Disney is already a massive company and this would only add to their stock pile of things that have pretty much just because they can. Thankfully for now the deal is dead, but you never know with Disney. There is the small remote hope that if a deal does happen that the FCC might block it and force Disney to sell off parts in order to complete the purchase thus spreading out rights all over the place once again.
The mad man Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of the much beloved Cowboy Bebop anime and the cult favorite Samurai Champloo is making a new series. And yes music will factor heavily into the series, though details remain sparse as he only said he’s working on a new series. The small snippet of the story can be found on Comicbook.com,
My ears perked up a bit when I heard this news as Bebop was such an amazing show when I was a kid. Champloo was a nice follow up to it, but never reached that same high of Bebop while still being fairly awesome. So, obviously I’m going to eyes out for anymore news to see what becomes of this new show.
