Tunneling through the puzzling games of Greenlight.

In the words of a famous song, “Welcome to the jungle,” only this jungle happens to games on Steam Greenlight that are up for votes.  This post is for games that caught my attention from January 17 to 19, 2016 or any game caught in my queue from before then.

I have a few things I like to write out before I get to talking about the games, so please bear with me. This list is created from what impresses me and catches me interest. That mean’s not every game will get a mention. I try my best to give every game a fair chance. It should also be noted that this post will soon be out of date, as games come and go quickly from Greenlight.

Rules:

  • Games must have – A trailer, and an English translation.
  • Games must look ready for Greenlight.
  • Reposted games that I’ve previously talked about will not be included.

 

And here are the Games:

 

Title: Sweet Fruitcake

Genre: Visual Novel

Art Style: 2D Hand Drawn

Synopsis: Set in an alternate universe where the Soviet Union did not collapse. And you are invited to take part in a magical school to make you a wizard, and you’ll have plenty of decisions to make that potentially will alter the world.

Opinion: The story seems a bit silly but fun.

Title: Control Craft 2

Genre: Strategy, Arcade

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: A fast paced real time strategy game, where you fight over control points by sending waves of your soldiers to attack. Think fast and pick your targets carefully as you’ll be attacked and must protect yourself as well.

Opinion: It has an interesting look to the game and is building on the first game.

Title: Overpower

Genre: Shooter

Art Style: 3D Third Person World

Synopsis: A MOBA inspired shooter with twitch fast paced controls along with constant action. This game is crowd funding on Kickstarter.

Opinion: It looks potentially amusing.

Title: Dashy Square

Genre: Platformer, Arcade, Music

Art Style: 2D Side Scroller

Synopsis: A rhythm based platformer where you’re jumping and moving about to the beat of the music while avoiding pitfalls, spikes, and other nefarious traps.

Opinion: It does remind me a bit of Geometry Dash.

Title: Mystery Puzzle Hunt : The Beginning Of The Truth

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: You have received an anonymous folder, and when you open it you learn of a Dr. Quantum, a man who wants you to find what he’s hidden. Of course, since Dr. Quantum doesn’t know you well he’s going to test your puzzle skills with every new piece of information you discover. This game is crowd funding on Indiegogo.

Opinion: It has potential especially for those that like searching through papers to figure out the end puzzle.

Title: Dragon Climax

Genre: Brawler, Arcade

Art Style: 2D Pixel Side Scroller

Synopsis: Years of a great depression have left North Town a crime ridden city. It’s only beacon of light a dojo where the weak can learn to defend themselves. The master of the dojo however is falling sick and the crimal underground is after his young daughter. It’s up the master’s son along with the help of the master’s daughter who followed a different path to save the day.

Opinion: The game reminds me of the old arcade brawler’s where you’re worried about the enemies in front of you and advancing to the next screen.

Title: Zone of Lacryma

Genre: Shooter

Art Style: 2D Top Down

Synopsis: 120 after humanity on earth has perished, a 20km metallic sphere orbits the Y star, this is where the last of humanity is, and where you begin. Inspired by the old vertical space shooters, this game puts you in the same shoes blasting away at enemies as you fly along.

Opinion: While minimalistic in visuals, it does look quite nice.

Title: Cubascu2 PC Hard Challenging Puzzle Game

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: Draw a line connect all the boxes on the level. Simple, but as you go it gets more complex where certain boxes must be linked through at a certain time.

Opinion: It isn’t for me.

Title: Abot

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Minimalist Screens

Synopsis: A game where you control both the player element and the level in order to get around and solve the puzzle of that level.

Opinion: I watched the trailer and read the game description on the Greenlight page but never really grasped what the game is trying to do.

Title: Pandora’s Room

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 3D First Person World

Synopsis: What would happen if you were in a room and the only thing in their with you is a giant red button? Do you press it? Or do you not press it? The room revolves around your choices.

Opinion: An interesting game. I’d probably press all the buttons to create chaos.

Title: Jelly Killer

Genre: Platfomrer

Art Style: 2D Pixel Side Scroller

Synopsis: In the year 2784 scientist have finally figured out what causes zombies! Of course this quickly turns to people creating biological weapons from it and creating a living and breathing thing. You play as one such biological experiment working their way through people and traps to escape.

Opinion: It looks cute and potentially fun.

Title: Anomalies

Genre: Simulation

Art Style: 3D World

Synopsis: This is more of an art game than a game you play. You create anomalies and see how they react and act.

Opinion: An odd and weird project.

Title: Gnomes Garden 2

Genre: Strategy, Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: The queen of the trolls has returned from banishment and has taken the queen of the gnomes to a far away land with no magical gardens. It’s up to the queen of the gnomes to get the gnomes who live under the queen of trolls to unite and relearn about the magic of gardens.

Opinion: A cute simple way to potentially waste away some time.

Title: Lucid9

Genre: Visual Novel

Art Style: 2D Hand Drawn

Synopsis: A mystery novel where you go through life coming ever closer to murdering someone. Your decisions will help you find out what’s going on in this alternate world.

Opinion: I like the idea of fighting against the future of becoming a murderer or letting the game potentially play out.

Title: -KLAUS-

Genre: Platformer, Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Side Scroller

Synopsis: You wake up in a weird place, with no memory and only the word Klaus written on your arm. You must be precise in this platforming adventure or you will never be able to find out who Klaus is and what he’s doing there.

Opinion: While the story line is a bit cliche, I like the overall feel of the game and its quirky fun visuals.

Title: Meld

Genre: Strategy, Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: A puzzle game where you must match colors to clear them off of a level. It isn’t easy as you’ll be challenged with many different colors that will block your way.

Opinion: I’m not feeling this one.

Title: Sequencer

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Screens

Synopsis: An abstract puzzle game, where you must fill the spaces up to get to the end piece and clear the level.

Opinion: I got kind of lost watching the trailer, perhaps if their was a voice over explaining what’s what I would grasp it better.

Title: Robots in the Wild

Genre: Strategy, Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Level

Synopsis: This game tasks you with building a base out of block, some can attack, some can build out blocks, while others will light the way. You build to protect the hearts that have been spread out across a vast land after an asteroid struck the mothership. In order to save them, you must build.

Opinion: It’s a quirky trailer that makes the game seem pretty fun.

Title: Battle Cars

Genre: Racing, Shooter, Arcade

Art Style: 3D Third Person Arena

Synopsis: A fast paced car combat game, where you’re trying to blow up your fellow racers before they do that to you.

Opinion: Visually speaking it is not very inspiring.

Title: 3..2..1..Grenades!

Genre: Shooter, Arcade

Art Style: 3D First Person World

Synopsis: A two to four player game where you are fighting it out with your friends but you can only use grenades to kill them.

Opinion: It sounds okay, but it also will potentially run out of interesting game play quickly.

Title: Piece By Piece

Genre: Puzzle

Art Style: 2D Jigsaw Puzzles

Synopsis: put together jigsaw puzzles using reference pictures and trying to figure out how to snap together the pieces.

Opinion: A game for those that don’t want to deal with the potential loss of jigsaw pieces that or you just can’t get enough of jigsaw puzzles.

Title: Aperion Cyberstorm

Genre: Shooter, Arcade

Art Style: 2D Top Down

Synopsis: A single player mode that takes you to fighting corruption and conspiracy amongst your enemies. An Onslaught mode that tasks you with surviving wave after wave of enemies. Or Versus where you can fight it out against your friends.

Opinion: It’s one of those games where you may have trouble keeping up with what’s going on with so many bullets flying and your ship is going all over the place.
